Anatomy of a Hug explores what happens when a convict, Sonia, receives Compassionate Release from her prison sentence into her daughter Amelia’s care. A lifetime of living through beloved TV characters doesn’t prepare Amelia for the actual drama of her mother’s return or the advances of a charming co-worker, Ben. The ticking clock of her mother’s illness means Amelia must decide if her fictional life is safer than the possibility of her own story.

Every August, Trustus Theatre debuts a world premiere production on the Thigpen Main Stage. The Trustus Playwrights’ Festival started in 1988 with the goal of producing new works from playwrights around the country for Columbia audiences. Submissions are taken from all over the nation to find a winner. The winning scripts receive a full production on the Trustus Thigpen Main Stage at the end of our season. Past festival winners such as Jon Tuttle, Stephen Belber, and Andrea Lepico have gone on to have their scripts published and performed all over the nation. Past winner David Lindsay-Abaire was even awarded the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award later in his career.
Always fresh and contemporary, the Trustus Playwrights’ Festival is an exciting part of the theatre’s programming. Offering new works to the American theatrical cannon is an important part of our mission because it allows us to give new playwrights a stage for their voice. It gives audiences the chance to experience the birth of a new play. It gives local artists the opportunity to be the first to tell a fresh theatrical story.
