Marcus, or the Secret of Sweet, comes to the Thigpen Main Stage at Trustus Theatre from February 3-18.
Marcus, or the Secret of Sweet tells the story of a sixteen year-old boy living in the fictional projects of San Pere, Louisiana. His close-knit community plays a big role as he navigates through the currents of his life and searches for his sexual and personal identity. It’s a coming-of-age story about a young, gay African-American man in the South. It is provocative, poignant and fiercely humorous.
“The production furnishes much of the heart and inventiveness of the last two Brother/Sister Plays, and still tackles subject matter that is relevant and important in our country,” states Director Chad Henderson.
Marcus is Part III of the Brother/Sister plays, a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney. McCraney was also the storywriter for the recent Golden Globe Award winning Moonlight. The lead actor, John Floyd, states, “Marcus, or the Secret of Sweet is unlike a lot of the plays you have seen. It takes a different approach to hook the viewer; by inviting them inside the narrative and making them feel complicit in the storytelling. You can’t help but like this play because you can’t get around good writing.”
