September 08 - September 23 Thigpen Main Stage

By Robert O’Hara
Directed by Ilene Fins

“Audacious, fearless” (New York Times) playwright Robert O’Hara  (Bootycandy) reserves a provocative, hilarious and shatteringly honest new take on good old family comedy. As the curtain rises on Robert O’Hara’s Barbecue, the audience is introduced to the siblings of the O’Mallerys, a White family that’s gathering for a barbecue in a public park. We soon learn that this cookout is actually setting the stage for an intervention intended for their sister Barbara, or as they all know her: Zippity Boom. Suddenly, in the middle of the first scene, the lights go down and come back up to reveal the same O’Mallery family, but now they are Black. What follows becomes raucous and unpredictable as familial stereotypes collide with hard realities, and racial politics slam up against the stories we tell—and maybe even believe—about who we were and who we’ve become. Join us for an incredibly unique evening in the theatre as we introduce the work of one of America’s most exciting contemporary playwrights to Columbia, SC. How do you like your smart comedies? Well done?
